La nueva destreza aprendida empodera a estas personas a crear su propia micro empresa convirtiéndolas en generadoras de ingresos para sus familias, creando a su vez un nuevo canal para el control de las poblaciones de peces Leon de la región.
Este Primer taller de taxidermia del Pez León contó con el apoyo de la Fundación Corazón a Corazón, Fundación Ademi, Rufford Foundation y la Fundación Ecológica Puntacana.
Lionfish taxidermy shop, successfully completed!
Since 2012, Grupo Puntacana through its ecological foundation, Puntacana Ecological Foundation, has successfully developed a program to control lionfish population. This program consisted of buying from local fishermen and various parts of the country, the lionfish to prepare a variety of exotic dishes at the resort’s restaurants.
As part of the efforts to eradicate this highly invasive species, Puntacana Ecological Foundation, organize an 8 days course, at its facilities, of lionfish taxidermy imparted by Cuban professor Marco Antonio Olcha. Mr. Antonio, expert in marine taxidermy from the Ecological and Systematic Institute of Habana Cuba, coached about the art of taxidermy specifically of the lionfish, to 3 fisherman families from Juanillo, a Puntacana Ecological Foundation member and 2 craftsmen in Bayahibe. The taxidermy learned skills, empowers these people to create their own little business, creating a new channel for the control of lionfish stocks, and to generate income for their families.
This first workshop had the support of Foundation Corazon a Corazon, Ademi Foundation, Rufford Foundation and the Puntacana Ecological Foundation.
